Safety and Security on Campus
Always lock your door and travel with friends. If you see something, say something.
Generally, we are safe on campus, but we cannot fully prevent crime from happening in our community. Safety is not something to be taken lightly. Our campus is located in a big city where crime happens all the time. By being proactive and practicing simple tips, we can help keep ourselves and our community safe.
If you haven’t done so already, program the following phone numbers in your cell phone:
1. Department of Public Safety: (202) 687-4343
2. GERMS: (202) 687-HELP (4357)
3. On-Campus Emergency: 7-HELP (7-4357) or 9-911
4. SafeRides: (202) 784-RIDE
Other safety tips include:
1. Know where the emergency blue lights are located on campus (call boxes answered by the Department of Public Safety)
2. Never walk alone, especially at night or off campus (safety in numbers!)
3. Be aware of your surroundings at all times
HOYAlert
Another way to stay up to date on campus safety is to enroll in HOYAlert. You can do this from your Student Access+ page. This notification system sends emergency alerts through emails, voice messages, and text messages.
Report Suspicious Activity
Students and employees are urged to contact the Department of Public Safety either by phone or through the emergency blue lights (call boxes) if they notice unusual, suspicious or criminal activity. Suspicious individuals should be reported to the Department of Public Safety, especially if they are seen:
• Entering a neighbor's room, apartment or home
• Entering an office or lab without apparent purpose
• Loitering in a parking lot, near residences or offices
• Carrying two bicycles or bicycle parts
• Trying to force open a car window or door
• Using a coat hanger or other device to open a car door
• Attempting to solicit funds
• Acting in a loud, disruptive or threatening manner
Individuals may also report suspicious activity by calling the anonymous tips telephone line at (202) 687-2320 or complete the online anonymous tip form.
