Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening (bleaching) is best for patients who have healthy teeth and gums, but it is not for everyone. You should consult your dentist to determine if it is a viable option for you.
Things to be aware of:
- Allergies to whitening products or peroxide, the whitening agent.
- Individuals with gum disease, cavities, worn enamel, may be sensitive to the procedure.
- Fillings, crowns, or other restorations do not whiten. Individuals with dental restorations may experience uneven whitening. Any whitening procedure should take place before dental restorations.
- Smokers’ success will be limited unless they refrain from smoking, especially during the whitening process.
- Yellowish stained teeth respond best to whitening, brownish stained teeth respond less well and grayish or purple hued teeth may not respond at all. Individuals with dark stains may be candidates for other whitening treatments such as crowns, veneers or bonding.
